SK Innovation has recently taken another step by establishing a partnership with Solid Power (a Colorado company that is a global leader in the field of all-solid-state batteries) to maintain its leading position in electric vehicle battery technology. The two companies plan to collaborate on the development of a new generation of electric vehicle batteries that are safer and have higher energy density, allowing electric vehicle drivers to go further every time they charge.

As part of the agreement, SK Innovation and Solid Power will jointly develop all solid-state batteries. They also plan to verify whether Solid Power's all-solid-state batteries can be manufactured on existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing equipment.

In addition, SK Innovation pledged to invest 30 million US dollars in Solid Power, which has attracted much attention for its leadership in this new field of battery technology. Earlier this year, Ford and BMW announced an investment and development agreement with Solid Power.

The next big leap in electric vehicle batteries

The innovative partnership between SK and Solid Power focuses on what many industry experts consider the next major development of electric vehicle batteries. Today's lithium-ion electric car batteries use liquid or gel electrolytes to store energy.

Solid Power uses a proprietary sulfide solid electrolyte to replace the liquid electrolyte. Compared with today's batteries, all solid-state batteries are more stable in a wide temperature range and have a higher energy density. These qualities have the potential to create batteries with less volatility and lighter weight, and can provide longer driving ranges for electric vehicles.

This partnership is another example of SK’s commitment to advancing sustainability. In many industries, SK Group companies are transforming their businesses to support environmentally friendly business models and technologies.

SK Innovation and its new electric car battery spin-off product SK On are ready to become one of the world's top electric car battery manufacturers. The SK Battery America plant in Commerce, Georgia will begin mass production of electric vehicle batteries next year, and plans to build new plants in Tennessee and Kentucky as part of the BlueOvalSK and Ford joint venture.
